Historical Figures revolving around the Steel Industry were one of the most important actors or the transformation of the built environment during the Centuries. By changing the course of the river, they alterate our system of value, our perceptions and the non human life.
The Cutlery protoindustry was important in Sheffield as the beginning of the "harnessing of elements" in the 12th Century. Starting the 16th, artificial ponds were created as an important transformation of the river site. The arrival of steam engines for mills in parallel of the Crucible Steel process launched the artisans into the era of manufactories. Then the train came with the Industrial Revolution. The industries didn't need to see the polluated waters again... but that is another story...
Les figures historiques autour de l'industrie de l'acier sont parmi les plus importantes figures de la transformation de l'environnement construit au cours des siècles. En altérant le cours de la rivière, ils sont modifié le paradigme de notre système de valeur, de notre représentation de la rivière ainsi que des systèmes techniques.
La protoindustrie de la coutellerie était importante déjà au moment du harnachement des éléments au 12e siècle. A partir du 16e siècle, des lacs artificiels commencèrent à être créés pour accueillir des systèmes productifs plus performants. L'arrivée conjointe des machines à vapeur pour les moulins et l'acier en creuset, décupla la production et fit entrer les artisans dans le monde des manufactures.
Le train, enfin, arriva et avec celui ci la rivière disparut, et avec elle la vision de la pollution industrielle... mais c'est une autre histoire...
